How to make an AI-written reference request sound human
Paste it in below — the rewriter is already set to “reference request”, so it rewrites for the person who actually reads one. Then keep scrolling for the specific thing that gives a reference request away, and a before-and-after.

Why it reads differently
Read it before you send it. Your name is on this, so fix anything that is not true of you and put back the one specific detail only you know.
The thing that gives a reference request away
Formality where there should be warmth, and no exit. AI asks whether someone “would be willing to serve as a professional reference” without ever making it easy to say no.
It is worth being precise about this, because “sounds like AI” is not one problem. Every kind of writing has its own tell, and for a reference request it is the one above. Once you can see it in your own draft you will start catching it before you paste anything anywhere.
Before and after
Written by hand, not generated — a realistic AI-sounding draft and the same thing as a person would write it.
Reads like AI
I hope this message finds you well. I am reaching out to inquire whether you would be willing to serve as a professional reference for me as I pursue new opportunities within the field.
Reads like a person
Hi Maya — I’m applying for a research role at Cordell and they want two references. Would you be up for being one? Completely fine if you’d rather not, or if now’s a bad time.
Notice what actually changed: the sentence lengths stopped matching, the stock phrasing went, and the specific detail moved to the front. Nothing was added that a real writer would not have known.
Who reads a reference request, and what they notice
Someone doing you a favour. They notice whether you remembered what you worked on together, and whether you gave them a graceful way out.
This is the whole reason the rewrite has to change with the text type. The writing that decides whether a stranger gives you twenty minutes. Recruiters read the same stock openers hundreds of times a month, so sounding like everyone else is the expensive mistake here.
How to fix it yourself, without any tool
Worth knowing, because the point is to stop needing a rewriter. Four passes, five minutes:
- Delete the first sentence. In most AI drafts it is setup. Start at the second sentence and see whether you lost anything — usually you did not.
- Break the rhythm. Find three sentences of similar length in a row and cut one of them in half. That single change does more than any word swap.
- Put in one plain word. Formal writing with a single ordinary word in it reads as human; flawless register reads as generated.
- Add the detail only you have. The number, the name, the thing that happened. This is the part no rewriter can do for you, and it is the part that works.

MonkeyPen rewrites the words you give it and keeps every fact intact — it does not research, verify or invent detail, and it is not a substitute for reading your own draft before you send it. It is a writing tool, not a guarantee about how anyone will react to your reference request.
